What is Aircon Gas?
A car radiator needs coolant to keep the engine cool. Similarly, an aircon unit needs refrigerant to keep a room cool.
The refrigerant (many people still incorrectly refer to it as freon gas) circulates through the aircon, from the outdoor unit to the indoor blower unit. At the blower unit, the refrigerant is very cold, so it takes the heat out of the room, and becomes warmer. The warmer refrigerant is circulated to the outdoor unit, where it is compressed to become cold again, and the cycle continues.
Why does the aircon gas need to be topped up?
The refrigerant circulates between the indoor unit and outdoor unit through pipes. After a while, these pipes may develop small leaks, and the aircon gas will slowly escape over time, just like a balloon. When there is not enough aircon gas, it will be unable to cool the room properly.
